Less well-known but just as important: some other RMDs
The learning objective of this module is to raise awareness of the issues faced by people living with less well-known rheumatic and muskuloskeletal diseases (RMDs), such as access to effective treatments, stigma, and social participation. The full session will last 90 minutes, and consist of four talks, the first by a rheumatology consultant, the other three by the presidents of the European umbrella organisations for scleroderma, lupus, and ankalosing spondelitis.
Each talk will last 20 minutes. The scleroderma talk will be: Taking action against stigmatization.
The session is scheduled for Wednesday 06.06.2012 17:00 - 18:30 in “Room NEW YORK 3.
The 4 topics covered will be:
1. Treating the lesser known RMDs
2. Accessing specialist care for rare and complex RMDs
3. Taking action against stigmatization
4. Working to participate equally
The speakers will cover the assigned topics with relation to all three conditions, using the disease with which they deal as the chief example. Areas of similarity will be highlighted, such as:
• Need for highly specialized care
• Length of time until diagnosis is achieved
• Similarities of the conditions—age at onset, auto-immunity, connective tissue
inflammation, co-morbidities
• Needs in care and treatment
• Complexity of these diseases
The speakers will be:
• Professor Alan Tyndall, Head of Dept. Rheumatology, University of Basel, Switzerland, and Chair of EULAR Standing Committee for Clinical Affairs
• Ann Tyrrell Kennedy, president of Federation of European Scleroderma Associations (FESCA)
• Cor van Drogen, president of ASIF
• Kirsten Lerstrøm, president of LUPUS EUROPE
